Hangin’ Out At…Maria Bonita
Maria Bonita used to be across the street from UCF on Alafaya Trail, but has since moved to its current location on East Colonial. I used to eat at the original somewhat regularly when I was a graduate student, so when I asked the server how long ago they changed locations and she said she had no knowledge of the move, that it must’ve been quite a long time ago, I felt old.
I didn’t let my sense of mortality distract me from the food though. My favorite part came first: the bowl of warm, crisp tortilla chips with a side of salsa.
I couldn’t decide what to have, so got a little bit of everything. The Mexicana combination platter ($10) came with a cheese enchilada, a beef taco, a chicken sope (which I’d never heard of, but the server explained that it’s a classic filling that goes inside a very thick tortilla and I figured, how could you go wrong with that?), Mexican rice and refried beans. A veritable mountain of tasty food.
Hubby had two large beef burritos (also $10) with lots of gooey cheese, refried beans and Mexican rice.
There was so much food that we ended up taking at least half of it home (What can I say? The tortilla chips were REALLY good!).
The takeaway: Besides the copious amounts of food, Maria Bonita also has a fun, upbeat atmosphere. And the murals that adorn the walls are just beautiful. Worth a visit almost by themselves!
Hours: Monday-Thursday, 11:30a-9:30p, Friday 11:30a-10:30p, Saturday noon-10:30p and Sunday noon-9:30p
Location: 10615 East Colonial Drive, Orlando, Florida 32817
Bonus: Although the majority of the food is Mexican, Maria Bonita also offers some Cuban dishes. Next time I’d love to try the Ropa Vieja and, of course, the croquetas.
